Man Suffers 'Possibly Life-Threatening' Injuries In 1-Story Fall

Fire officials are urging residents to be careful cleaning out their gutters after a man suffered serious injuries performing the task.

FAIRFIELD, CT — The Fairfield Fire Department is urging residents to be careful cleaning out their gutters for winter after a man suffered serious injuries in a one-story fall, a fire official said.

The fire department responded about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday to the 100 block of Autumn Ridge Road after the man, a contractor hired to clean out the gutters for a home, fell from either the roof or a ladder, according to Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir. The department reached the scene six minutes after receiving the emergency call, Kalapir said, and the man was taken to a nearby hospital with "severe, possibly life-threatening" injuries.

"Just a single-story fall from a ladder could be a life-threatening fall," Kalapir said, adding residents cleaning out their gutters this time of year should exercise caution and ensure the ladder is secured.
