FAIRFIELD, CT — A New York man claimed to have amnesia when questioned by Fairfield police after he tried to steal nearly $4,000 from someone else’s bank account, according to law enforcement.

Richard R. Hardy, 55, of the 2700 block of Kingsbridge Terrace in the Bronx, was charged last month with first-degree forgery, third-degree attempted larceny, impersonation and interfering with an officer, according to a police report.

The incident occurred Aug. 17, when a teller at Chase Bank, 2272 Black Rock Turnpike, called law enforcement about three men trying to make a fraudulent withdrawal in the bank drive-thru, the report said. Hardy, who was among the trio, gave police a fake name and said he was trying to withdraw $3,800 from his account, according to the report.

Hardy showed police a passport card with his picture and the false name, but when asked for his birthday, the date he gave did not match the passport card, the report said. He was also unable to answer several security questions associated with the account, and when asked why, he told police he had amnesia, according to the report.

After being taken to police headquarters, Hardy admitted he had used a false name, and told law enforcement that the other two men in the car gave him the fake ID and promised him money if he tried to withdraw from the account, the report said.
