FAIRFIELD, CT — The man who beat and raped a Fairfield college student in the middle of the night five years ago was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison, according to the Greenwich Time. Edibaldo "Eddie" Duran pleaded guilty in May to home invasion and aggravated first-degree sexual assault. In addition to the prison sentence, the 29-year-old will be subject to 10 years of special parole.

Police said that at about 3 a.m. Sept. 1, 2014, a man broke into a private residence occupied by female college students. The victim, who was the lone occupant of the home at the time, was "awakened by the suspect, beaten, sexually assaulted, and strangled to the point of unconsciousness," according to police.

After an "intensive investigation," including a scientific examination of physical evidence, Duran was identified as the person responsible for the attack and an affidavit was signed for his arrest in September of 2014, police said. On Sept. 5, 2014 at 12:45 a.m., Duran boarded an AeroMexico flight that departed from JFK and arrived in Mexico City at 5:08 a.m. later that same morning. In December of 2018, Duran was extradited from Mexico to Connecticut and taken into the custody of the Fairfield Police Department. Duran is from Mexico and Judge Robert Devlin said Duran would be deported after serving time in prison, the Greenwich Time reports.
