Medical Group Ordered To Pay $1 Million For Fairfield Man’s Death

A jury found the medical group responsible for causing the death of a retired Fairfield University professor.

FAIRFIELD, CT — A Fairfield medical group has been ordered by a Superior Court jury to pay $1 million to the family of a retired Fairfield University professor who died in 2013 after being prescribed the wrong medication, according to the Connecticut Post.

The Post reports the jury found Dr. Peter Tortora and the Fairfield Medical Group responsible for causing the death of Richard Tyler, 86, of Fairfield, when he was mistakenly prescribed Coumadin, a blood thinner used to treat blood clots, after seeing Tortora for treatment of a duodenal ulcer.

The medical group didn’t deny negligently causing Tyler’s death, but instead contested the amount of damages based on Tyler’s age and history of heart problems, according to the Post.
