Occupants Outside Home When Firefighters Arrive; Two Cats Still Inside

Two cats were rescued from a fire on May Street in Fairfield Saturday night.

The fire at a ranch-style home at 138 May St. started in the basement and had extended to the first floor when firefighters arrived about 10:22 p.m. All three occupants - a grandmother, son and granddaughter - were out of the house when firefighters arrived, but two cats were still inside, according to Assistant Fire Chief Stephen B. Curry.

Firefighters rescued the cats and had the fire under control in about 25 minutes. The fire was extinguished in about an hour, according to the Fire Department's report.

The fire is considered accidental but its cause hasn't been determined, according to the report.

Arriving firefighters saw smoke in the first floor and heavy flames breaking through windows at a walk-out basement area. The fire extended into first-floor walls at the rear of the home, according to the report.

Four engine companies and two ladder companies responded to the scene, along with American Red Cross and town Building Department officials. Bridgeport firefighters covered Fire Station 2 in case more calls came in, according to the report.

The fire is under investigation by the Fairfield Fire Marshal's Office.

The home is owned by Dorothy Kalloz and was most recently assessed at $183,960. It was built in 1957 and sits on 0.17 acre, according to tax records.
