UNCASVILLE, CT — Newington and Notre Dame-Fairfield both came to the Mohegan Sun Arena Saturday in search of their school's first-ever girls basketball state championship. The two teams had been a combined 0-for-7 in previous title game appearances, but something had to give.

Long-range shooting in the form of four 3-point baskets in the first eight minutes after intermission gave the Lancers a 44-36 lead after three quarters. It was a lead they would not relinquish en route to a 60-45 victory in the Class L championship game for that elusive first state title.

Aizhanique Mayo connected on three of those treys on her way to a game-high 22 points. Sarah Macary had 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, while Taylor Gibbs was also in double figures with 10 points. Gibbs and Macary each grabbed nine rebounds.
