Obituary: Barbara Torrey MacAllaster, 87, of Fairfield

The longtime Fairfield resident operated her own business, Barbara T. MacAllaster Interiors.

Barbara Torrey MacAllaster, 87, of Fairfield, beloved wife of the late Archie Freeman MacAllaster, II, passed away at home in the tender embrace of her children, Wed., Oct. 12, 2016.

Born in Ottawa, Canada, the daughter of the late Arthur Starratt Torrey and Josephine Leonard Torrey, she had been a Fairfield resident since 1963. She graduated from the Netherwood School for Girls in New Brunswick, Canada and received her Bachelor’s Degree from St. Lawrence University in 1951.

Mrs. MacAllaster later received her graduate degree from Chamberlain School of Design in Boston and operated her own business, Barbara T. MacAllaster Interiors. She was a member and past president of the Sasqua Garden Club, a member of the Country Club of Fairfield and Southport Congregational Church.

She delighted in time spent with her family, friends and bridge group. Survivors include two beloved children, Sara Lane MacAllaster of Southport and David Starratt MacAllaster of New York City; a much beloved granddaughter, Alexandra MacAllaster Brooks of Southport; two brothers, David Leonard Torrey of Montreal, Canada and William Arthur Torrey of West Palm Beach, FL; a sister, Jane Torrey Stauffer of Searsport, ME and many beloved and adoring nieces and nephews and one great-niece.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Archie Freeman MacAllaster, III (Sandy). A memorial service will be held Friday, November 4, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Southport Congregational Church 524 Pequot Ave., Southport. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Mrs. MacAllaster may be made to the CT Audubon Society (Birdcraft Museum), 314 Unquowa Road, Fairfield, CT 06824 or the Fairfield Museum and History Center, 370 Beach Rd, Fairfield, CT 06824.
