Obituary: Edward J. Reilly, III, 73; Retired Fairfield Police Lieutenant, Shelton Resident

Retired Lieutenant Edward J. Reilly, III, age 73, of Shelton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bridgeport to the late Edward J. and Katherine (Raleigh) Reilly, Lt. Reilly was a graduate of Roger Ludlowe High School and received his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of New Haven.
He began his career at the Fairfield Police Department and worked in the Patrol and Detective Division before becoming a Lieutenant. Lt. Reilly initiated the “Officer Friendly Program” with the department, was President of the Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) and executive advisor of the Police Explorer Post. He received the Uniformed Service Award from the Jaycees, the “Spurgeon Award” and the “Silver Beaver Award” from the Boy Scouts of America.

An athlete, he played football for the University of Tennessee and coached football and baseball on the high school and college level including Sacred Heart University.
He is survived by his devoted daughters, Benthe Fahr of San Diego, CA; Carrie Barnum and her husband, Dennis of Bridgeport, Lauren Arszyla of Shelton; one son, Kevin Arszyla of Shelton; his cherished grandson, Justin; two sisters, Paula Reilly of Fairfield and Roberta Schreiber and her husband, Raymond of Port Orchard, WA; one brother, Thomas Reilly and his wife, Althea of Fairfield; and many friends. In addition to his parents, Lt. Reilly was predeceased by his wife, Deborah (Iacomacci) Reilly.

Friends and family may pay their respects on Friday, January 16, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield Center. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Joseph Piccarillo officiating. Interment to follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
