Obituary: Helen H. Hamm, 75, of Fairfield

She was an educator in the Fairfield school system for 25 years, teaching primarily first grade at Stratfield Elementary School.

Helen H. Hamm, 75, of Fairfield, beloved wife of Robert E. Hamm and a dedicated educator for much of her adult life, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Smilow Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Born in New York City and raised in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Ellen Hughes. She had been a Fairfield resident for the past 48 years. Helen graduated from Stamford High School, received a B.A. degree from Danbury State Teachers College and a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport.

She began her teaching career in Greenwich where she worked for five years then taught in the Fairfield school system for 25 years, teaching primarily first grade at Stratfield Elementary School.

Following her retirement Helen taught part-time at Trinity Episcopal Nursery School. She served as secretary of the Retired Educators of Fairfield (REF) since 2012.

Helen was an active parishioner for many years at Our Lady of the Assumption Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and sang in the Resurrection Choir. Earlier, she was a member of Assumption’s Emmaus community and served as editor of its Good News Letter.

Helen was a loyal and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her deep faith was important to her, and she will be fondly remembered as an educator and nurturer who loved spending time with children. She would often look after former students, many of whom still reach out to her to this day.

Survivors in addition to Robert, her loving husband of over 50 years, are two beloved sons, Douglas Hamm and Rebecca Siwicki of Stamford and Gregory Hamm and his wife, Catherine, and their daughter, Katelyn, of Boston; and her devoted sister and best friend, Johanna Hughes of Fairfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 545 Stratfield Road, Fairfield. Interment will be private. Friends may call Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
