The following obituary of former Southport resident James M. Grant, M.D., 97, is from Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home:
James M. Grant, M.D., age 97, of Windham, VT and formerly of Southport, CT and Manhattan,
the beloved husband of 46 years of Paula DiMeo Grant, passed away peacefully on August 3,
2022. Born in New York City to the late Attorney Havens Grant and Carolyn Hall Grant, he was
a descendant of Ulysses S. Grant. He was raised in Scarsdale, NY and spent summers in
Ogunquit, ME where he first learned to sail. He also learned to play the violin at a young age and
had duets with his mother, who played piano.
Dr. Grant was a graduate of Pomfret School in Pomfret, CT. Upon graduation, he entered
Columbia University as a participant in the U.S. Navy V-12 Program and later served as a
Captain in the U.S. Air Force. He received his undergraduate degree from Columbia College in
New York, NY and his Doctor of Medicine from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.
He practiced internal medicine in the Bridgeport area before becoming a nephrologist.
In 1970, Dr. Grant, along with the late Dr. Donald Silverman, was instrumental in bringing
dialysis to the greater Bridgeport area. They co-founded the Southern Connecticut Dialysis Unit
which is now owned by Davita. In addition, they co-founded Nephrology Associates which has
remained an active medical practice in the area.

For many years, Dr. Grant served as Chief of Nephrology at St. Vincent’s Hospital where he also
served as Assistant Director of Medical Education; and was the proud recipient of The Teacher’s
Award as voted by the medical residents he taught. For many years, he was an Assistant Clinical
Professor at Yale School of Medicine.
Dr. Grant dedicated his life to medicine. He loved the practice of medicine beyond measure; and
he combined a keen intellect with a kind heart in serving his patients for more than 50 years until
his retirement in 2000.
