Michael Kurt Hamilton, 57, of Fairfield, passed away on Saturday, February 4th. Beloved husband and loving son, revered father and reverent big brother – Mike leaves behind a family he loved and one who loved him deeply.

Born in Anderson, Indiana on January 5th, 1960, Mike lived all over the U.S. for much of his youth, from Ohio to Minnesota to Virginia. He was a hockey player and Eagle Scout. It was probably here that his tenacity and loyalty first took form.

Mike spent much of his adult life working with his father at their store, Vic’s Liquor, in Stamford. Together they built a successful business energized by an ethos of, and for, family. There he worked relentlessly for many things. Amongst what he considered to be his greatest achievements was sending his son, Matt, and daughter, Molly, to college. Molly is currently attending his alma matter, Virginia Tech. Of this, he could not have been prouder.

He was a golfer, a skier, an erudite collector of coins, a fierce fan of many embattled sports teams, an aficionado of many musics, amateur virtuoso on the barbeque, and avid driver of his ‘69 Firebird. He was a teacher blessed with the ability to impart knowledge and skill in both the things in which he excelled, and in those in which he didn’t – like his short game on the golf course.

He gave much and asked for little in return. His kindness was ever so gentle, but his humor fiercely sarcastic. His love was without bounds. He was blessed with a deep humanity. For these things, and many more, he will not be forgotten. He is his son’s best friend, and his daughter’s perfectly imperfect hero. Because of these things, he will live eternally. We will show our love and gratitude to Mike on Saturday, February 18th. The family will have a private burial, followed by a visitation at the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., and a ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m. There will be a reception following the ceremony. Donations can be made in his name and honor to the Community Empowerment Fund, 208 N. Columbia Street, Suite 100, Chapel Hill NC 27516 where a fund in his name has been launched to support access to higher education for individuals transitioning out of homelessness.
