Obituary: Peter A. Stranko, 89, of Fairfield

Peter, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, passed away less than a month after his beloved wife of 66 years, Doris, passed away.

Peter A. Stranko, 89, of Fairfield, passed away Friday, June 9, 2017 joining his beloved wife of 66 years, Doris, who passed away May 18th.

Born in Bridgeport, the son of the late Peter and Helen Stranko, he had been a lifelong Fairfield resident. A graduate of Roger Ludlowe High School, Peter served proudly in the United States Marine Corps enlisting towards the end of World War II.

Mr. Stranko was employed for more than 35 years by the Southern New England Telephone Company. He was a very active member of the National Association of Naval Veterans, Port 5, and was proud to be the oldest living Marine in the Association. He was a past President of the Scandinavian Club where he was also a member of the Northstar Singers, and a member of the SS Norden Club.

Peter played for and coached numerous industrial league softball teams and also coached and refereed basketball in town and church recreation leagues. He and Doris loved to travel to many wonderful destinations.

Despite his many activities, the most important thing in Peter’s life was spending time with his cherished wife Doris and his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include three beloved children, Gary P. Stranko and his wife Kathryn of Danbury, Nancy Verzaro and Mark Kucinskas of Fairfield and Lisa Stranko of Marin County, CA; four loving grandchildren, Ryan and Derek Stranko, John Verzaro and Nicole Hessel and her husband C.J.; two cherished great-grandchildren, Harlee and Ryder Hessel; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Carlson.

A Memorial Service accompanied by military honors will be held Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 160 Hill Farm Road, Fairfield. A reception will follow in the Church Hall. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the National Association of Naval Veterans, Port 5, 69 Brewster Street, Bridgeport, CT 06605.
