Obituary: Robert Benedict Bellitto, Sr., 82, Of Fairfield

Robert Benedict Bellitto, Sr. “Bob” passed away peacefully on April 26, 2024 at the age of 82. A proud native of the Bronx, he decamped the borough with his family in 1952 for the pre-suburban wilds of Fairfield, Connecticut, where he lived the rest of his life.

A polio survivor, Bob paid his way through college and law school selling cars at Madison Motors in Bridgeport, a job that also led to meeting the love of his life, Sandy Tobis. A prescient woman, Sandy walked past the car lot one afternoon and stated her intention to marry Bob. She did.

Bob became an accomplished attorney, building his own law practice from the ground up, where he continued to work until his passing. He won landmark cases, helped clients buy their first home and was a respected attorney trial referee and arbitrator.

A man with no legitimate hobbies, Bob enjoyed mowing his lawn and watching and cursing at his favorite baseball team, the New York Yankees.

He was active as a baseball coach with the Fairfield National Little League and Babe Ruth League, was a member of the Elks Club and Greater Bridgeport Bar Association, and a PTA co-president with Sandy at Jennings School in Fairfield. He was also an excellent racquetball player, master griller and constructed a workbench from scratch that somehow lasted for decades.

Bob’s favorite pastime and greatest joy was spending time with his family. He is predeceased by his beloved parents, Benedetto and Concetta, infant son Stephen and infant grandson Joseph. He is survived by his adored wife Sandy, son Rob Bellitto, Jr. and wife Eileen, daughter Donna Lawrence and husband Chris, grandchildren Bridget, RJ, Christina, Christopher and Kathryn, great-grandchildren Soren and Samara, brother Rick, nephews Erick and Brian and niece Amanda.

Bob lived a purposeful life through sheer courage and determination and made the lives of those in his orbit quite a bit better. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed and always remembered.

There will be no calling hours. The family held a private burial service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield.
