Obituary: Shirley Ann Bensey Smith, 87, Of Fairfield
While raising two sons, Shirley began working at Fairfield University where she retired.

Shirley Ann Bensey Smith, the beloved wife of the late Stephen Bartlett Smith, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 3, 2024. Born on June 29, 1936 in Canebrake, West Virginia to Margaret H. and Steve E. Bensey, Shirley and her seven siblings moved to Southport at a young age and she was a Fairfield resident since.
Shirley attended the Pequot School in Southport and graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School in 1954. It was then she began working in the banking industry where she met her husband, Stephen. While raising two sons, Shirley began working at Fairfield University where she retired. An active member of the Fairfield Beach Club, Shirley enjoyed tennis, swimming, entertaining and spending time on the beach with friends or a good book.

Shirley is survived by her loving sons, Stewart B. Smith and his partner, Lawson Smith and Scott B. Smith, all of Fairfield. She will also be missed by her sister, Margaret Ganley of Norcross, GA, five stepchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 149 South Pine Creek Rd. in Fairfield. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
