The following obituary of Fairfield resident Walter J. Ward, Jr., 85, is from Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home:

Walter J. Ward, Jr., age 85, of Fairfield, the loving husband of the late Sally Mercurio Ward,
passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. He was born in Bridgeport, CT to
the late Walter, Sr. and Jennie Ward, and was a lifelong Fairfield resident. Walter was a
graduate of Roger Ludlowe High School, Class of 1956 and a U.S. Navy veteran stationed on the
U.S.S. Wrangell in Italy.

Returning to the U.S., he was a computer operator with McKesson’s for over thirty years. Post
retirement, he worked at Mercurios Market and Enterprise Car Rental. Walter loved traveling
and cruising the high seas with his wife, gardening and crafting fine scale ship models.

He is survived by his loving and devoted son, Timothy Ward of Fairfield and his sister, Arlene
Ward of Lakeville, CT. He will be missed by his niece and nephew, Sara Hyde of McLean, VA
and Paul Hyde and his wife, Annie of Scottsdale, AZ; his brother-in-law, Brian Hyde and great
niece, Katie Hyde, both of Winchester, VA.

Friends may greet his family on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 from 4-6 p.m. at the Shaughnessey
Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on
Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church with interment to
follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery with full military honors.
