Opinion: Personal Attacks on TPZ Leadership Are Baseless, Unprofessional, and Unproductive

The Fairfield Democratic Town Committee is compelled to respond to a sustained pattern of personal attacks on TPZ Chairman Tom Corsillo attributed to Commissioner Veronica Monahan.

Part of serving as a public official is accepting criticism from constituents with differing views. Occasionally that criticism crosses a line into personal attacks that have nothing to do with policy. This behavior from some private citizens in recent months has been troubling enough; when public officials serving on the same board do it, it must be called out.

These comments are not policy disagreements or statements of position. They are character attacks: casting doubt on good-faith public service; repeatedly referencing private employment to imply ulterior motives; and trafficking in conspiracy theories designed to embarrass fellow commissioners and erode public trust. Commissioner Monahan has gone so far as to suggest, without a shred of evidence, that Chairman Corsillo's professional background in land use and communications creates a conflict of interest.

In fact, his deep knowledge of land use, zoning, and housing policy is precisely what earned Mr. Corsillo a seat on the TPZ in 2023. Under his leadership, the commission has been doing exactly what voters elected it to do: navigating complex state legislation, preparing for Fairfield’s future, and delivering for residents. The recent pattern of attacks appears designed to thwart that work from within.

Moreover, Commissioner Monahan herself is professionally connected to the work of the TPZ as a licensed Realtor who practices in Fairfield. Criticizing a fellow commissioner who comes to the role with professional experience is hypocritical at best.

This behavior is a threat to good governance. Fairfield voters did not elect commissioners to sow distrust in public institutions, destabilize a working board, or conduct personal campaigns against their colleagues. They elected them to do a job. We call on our Republican counterparts to stop these attacks, return to the public record, and get to work for the people of Fairfield.
