Prep Tennis Advances To SCC Finals

Jesuits whip Amity, 7-0, in semifinals

The Fairfield Prep tennis team improved to 16-1 with a dominating 7-0 victory over Amity in the Southern Connecticut Conferences semifinals on Tuesday afternoon at the Yale University courts.

This was a case of the pupil beating the teacher, as Prep coach Tom Curran played for Amity mentor Chris Raffon when the latter was coaching at Quinnipiac.  Amity won only one set all afternoon

"It was a tough match," Raffon said. "Fairfield Prep is a really good team."

Prep's doubles teams did just as well, with Chris Indiveri and John Alteri winning, 6-1, 6-3, and Phil Fama and Kevin Culligan prevailing, 6-2, 6-4.

"His (Curran) three seniors (O'Brien, Carr and Ottomano) have been beating us up for years," Raffon said. "I can't wait until they graduate."

Prep takes on No. 2 seed Cheshire, which advanced with a 6-1 win over Guilford,  in the SCC finals Wednesday at 3:30 p.m at Yale University. The teams did not face each other during the regular season.

"Everyone's pretty excited," Curran said. "(We) want to test ourselves and see how we stack up."
