Roofer Dies Who Fell 40 Feet At Fairfield University: UPDATE

The 57-year-old victim fell through a skylight Tuesday morning.

FAIRFIELD, CT — The roofing contractor who fell 40 feet through a skylight at Fairfield University early Tuesday has died, according to Fairfield police.

The identity of the victim was being withheld by police pending notification of next of kin.

The incident occurred just after 7 a.m. at the university's Central Utilities Facility building, 1073 North Benson Road in Fairfield.

"Upon the arrival of emergency personnel, a 57-year-old male was located lying on the concrete floor in a semi-responsive state," Fairfield police wrote in a statement. "He was transported to Saint Vincent’s Medical Center where he later was pronounced deceased."

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was working on the rooftop of the building "when he apparently lost his balance and fell backwards through a skylight in the roof," police said. He landed on the concrete floor below, and the fall was approximately 40 feet.

In addition to Fairfield police and fire personnel, American Medical Response and Fairfield University Department of Public Safety personnel also responded to the scene.

"All units worked to stabilize the patient and quickly prepare him for transport," fire officials said in a statement.

Foul play is not suspected, but the incident is currently under investigation by the Fairfield Police Detective Bureau with the assistance of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
