FAIRFIELD, CT — A semitrailer spilled more than 50 gallons of diesel fuel Tuesday at a Fairfield rest stop, according to a fire official. The spill occurred about 7:30 a.m. at Exit 22 off Interstate 95, Fairfield Fire Department Deputy Chief Kyran Dunn said.

The semi pulled into the rest stop at the exit but ripped a saddle tank on a barrier in the parking lot, according to Dunn, pulling apart the fuel tank and causing the spill. The fire department, Connecticut State Police, Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and a licensed cleanup contractor responded to the incident and worked to contain the spill, using absorbent material to clean nearby drains and trapping the leak under the tank, Dunn said.

The drains at the rest stop connect to an oil separator that protected the water supply and contained the leak to the immediate area, he said.
