2nd Update: Fairfield police have lifted a shelter in place directive for the Candlewood Road area, as all suspects believed to have been involved in an armed robbery/home invasion Thursday morning have been apprehended:

There was a large and active police presence in the area of Candlewood Road and Black Rock Turnpike as officers conducted an extensive investigation related to this incident.

At this time, all suspects believed to be involved have been apprehended and are in police custody. Residents in the immediate area are no longer being asked to shelter in place.

This remains an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

1st Update: Fairfield police have released the following statement about Thursday's investigation into an armed robbery and home invasion on Candlewood Road. An arrest has been made, but two suspects are at-large. Residents of the Candlewood Road area have been instructed to shelter in place, and McKinley School and Fairfield Warde High School are closed:

On Thursday, February 19, 2026, just prior to 2:30 AM, the Fairfield Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery and possible home invasion in the area of Candlewood Road. Police were able to quickly ensure the safety of the victims and apprehend one suspect. An additional person of interest has since been located in Hamden, CT.

At this time, there is reason to believe there are two additional subjects that have yet to be located, and that one or both may be inside of a home on Candlewood Rd. Residents in the immediate area have been asked to shelter in place and a significant police presence remains visible in the area.

Due to the proximity to the incident and out of an abundance of caution, McKinley Elementary School and Fairfield Warde High School have been closed. There are no threats to any schools in Fairfield, however, understanding the concerns of parents, we have increased police presence at other schools in the area.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as the integrity of the investigation allows. We thank the public for their cooperation and ask that they remain away from the area to ensure a safe and efficient investigation and resolution.

Original story: FAIRFIELD, CT — Residents in the Candlewood Road neighborhood in Fairfield have been directed by police to shelter in place Thursday morning, while the department investigates an undisclosed "incident."

As a result of the police directive, McKinley School and Fairfield Warde High School were also closed Thursday, according to school officials.

"Out of an abundance of caution, McKinley School and Warde High School will be closed today, February 19, due to an ongoing police incident in the community," school district officials wrote in a statement. "ECC Warde will also be closed. Student and staff safety remains our highest priority. Staff assigned to these schools should not report today. Custodial staff should await information from their supervisor. Thank you for your patience and support."

Authorities have not released additional details about the incident, but announced they will provide more information "as soon as we can."
