Fairfield's State Delegation Recognizes World Ovarian Cancer Day
State Rep Cristin McCarthy Vahey leads effort to recognize World Ovarian Cancer Day after Co-Sponsoring Bill to Help Ovarian Cancer Patients

May 8 is World Ovarian Cancer Day so Fairfield State Rep. Cristin McCarthy Vahey joined the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition to recognize #WOCD with a state proclamation. This year's theme is "Leave No Woman Behind." The proclamation was issued by Rep. McCarthy Vahey, Rep. Laura Devlin, Rep. Jennifer Leeper and Senator Tony Hwang.
Showing their dedication to helping ovarian cancer patients, Sen. Tony Hwang and Rep. McCarthy Vahey co-sponsored a bill "AN ACT CONCERNING REQUIRED HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR BREAST AND OVARIAN CANCER SUSCEPTIBILITY SCREENING." All four members of Fairfield delegation voted in favor of the new proposed law. Senate Bill 358, which Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont should soon be signing into law.
The bill requires health insurance policies to cover the following services related to the testing and treatment of ovarian cancer: (1) genetic testing, including for breast cancer gene one (BRCA1) and breast cancer gene two (BRCA2), under certain circumstances; (2) post-treatment CA-125 monitoring (i.e., a test measuring the amount of the cancer antigen 125 protein); and (3) routine ovarian cancer screenings, including surveillance tests for certain insureds.

The proclamation helps brings awareness to #OvarianCancer by recognizing the work of organizations dedicated to families impacted by the disease. The Fairfield Delegation honored the work of Clearity, Discovery To Cure at Yale University School of Medicine and Sister Girl Foundation to help women survive and thrive from ovarian cancer. More importantly, Senator Hwang and Rep. McCarthy Vahey, Rep. Devlin and Rep. Leeper helped pass life-saving legislation.
