The Super Majority of Democrats in Hartford is Not Good for Anyone

It's time to rebalance power among the parties and put our state back in order

Our country was founded on the principle of freedom achieved through distribution of power. This was done through the creation of three branches of Government (legislature, judiciary and presidency). It was also achieved through our design as a Republic as opposed to a Democracy. Specifically, while the number of representatives of each state reflects the population, the number of senators is always two. The benefits of this structure apply at the state level also. Such an organization provides a check on the majority party having too much power and allows the minority party to have a voice.

Unfortunately, our Founding Fathers did not foresee the potential of a Super Majority as we now have in Connecticut. In fact, we have it in not only one, but both houses of government. (A majority is 51% of the seats while a Super Majority is 2/3rds). Democrats also hold the Governor’s seat.Prior to holding a Super Majority, the Democrats have held a majority in both houses for nearly 40 years, and the Governorship for the past 16 years.

Such a concentration of power leads to the minority party effectively having no voice, and lack of diversity of thinking and solutions explored. It also naturally leads to corruption, both financial and political. The focus then is on retaining power as opposed to solving actual problems of citizens. It’s all about the power!

What has this led to in Connecticut? Our ranking as a state as follows:

State debt load as a percentage of GDP 50th of 50
Property tax competitiveness 49th of 50
Best state to start a business 47th of 50
Overall tax competitiveness 47th of 50
Overall electricity price competitiveness 47th of 50
Business costs for startups 45th of 50
Affordability 44th of 50

This is appalling given our tremendous talent base, and exceptional educational and scientific institutions.

It has also led to:

·Loss of control in our towns to make decisions on local issues.

·Abrogation of local zoning rules by Hartford, pushing over development and stressing our sewer system, traffic patterns and schools.

·Loss of power of families to make decisions on schooling and health.

Regardless of your political affiliation, as an American I hope you buy into the idea of distribution of power and the ability of the minority to influence the majority. If you do, you need to vote the current incumbents OUT of power. We need to balance the Government with Republican candidates devoted to local control, fiscal responsibility, and individual freedom, including Amybeth Laroche for State Senate; Lisa Miro, Ken Astarita and Emily Hau for State Rep; and Ryan Fazio for Governor. Please vote to diminish one party rule and restore balance.
