FAIRFIELD, CT — It's election season in Fairfield, and Patch is here to help you get to know the candidates running for local office in 2021 before voters head to the polls Nov. 2.

Republican Thomas McCarthy, 68, is running for RTM in Fairfield District 7.

Occupation: Retired Financial Analyst/program Manager

Family: Wife Barbara, Daughters Meghan and Erin

Experience: Deputy Chair Joint Retirement Review Board and Former RTM majority Leader

Family in government: Meghan White (daughter): US State Department

The single biggest issue in town is ______, and I plan to do this about it:

Affordability. As a member of the RTM I will be judicious about spending, insist upon financial rigor, and and will work towards a business friendly environment to expand the commercial tax base.

Critical differences between me and my opponents:

I act independently and in the final analysis I am there to represent the interests of my constituents.

Accomplishments:

Under my leadership as RTM majority leader, material adjustments to the annual budget were made each year as appropriate. As Chairman of the Senior and Disabled Tax Relief committee, I revised the rules for tax relief to make them self adjusting to year over year tax increases. As Chairman of the RTM's Public Works and Planning Committee, and I worked with department heads to refresh the town's heavy truck fleet and backhoes.

Other issues:

I intend to work with the Board of Selectmen to facilitate their efforts to remedy inherited problems.

I work well others. Debate is healthy and and I believe that we can disagree without being disagreeable.
