Part of my duty as a firefighter for the Town of Greenwich is to educate the public about the dangers of fire and what they should do in emergency situations. Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to work with students from the Japanese School and give a tour of Greenwich’s Glenville Station – completely in Japanese.
I learned to speak Japanese in college, and it has come in handy ever since. I've used Japanese professionally as a trade representative in the State of Alaska's Tokyo office, as a bond trader stationed in Tokyo for Morgan Stanley, and more recently as a firefighter when I try to communicate the importance of fire safety to young kids.
Thanks to It’s Relevant for catching the tour on video, which can be viewed here.
