Vegan Dinner & Screening Of 'A Culinary Uprising, The Story Of Bloodroot' Scheduled In Fairfield

The exclusive event in late March is hosted by Joylark Kitchen.

FAIRFIELD, CT — On March 30, Fairfield-based Joylark Kitchen will host an evening program combining plant-based dining and a documentary screening focused on feminist history and culinary activism.

The event, held at the restaurant, will begin with a three-course vegan dinner, followed by a screening of “A Culinary Uprising: The Story of Bloodroot,” a documentary directed and produced by Annie Laurie Medonis.

The film chronicles the history of Bloodroot, a feminist, queer, vegan restaurant and bookstore that operated for 48 years in Bridgeport’s Black Rock neighborhood. Founded by Selma Miriam and Noel Furie, Bloodroot became a gathering place for activists, artists and community members. The restaurant closed in December 2025, several months after Miriam’s death in February 2025.

Through archival footage and interviews, the documentary examines the founders’ personal and professional partnership and the restaurant’s role in advancing feminist ideas, LGBTQ+ visibility and plant-based cuisine. The film also explores broader themes including sexism, homophobia, aging and political activism.

Joylark Kitchen opened in November 2025, a short distance from Bloodroot’s former location in Black Rock. Organizers say the March 30 program is intended to acknowledge Bloodroot’s influence while highlighting the continued presence of plant-based dining in the region.
