FAIRFIELD, CT — A vehicle that was recently stolen in an armed carjacking was involved in an attempted vehicle theft before fleeing police Saturday in Fairfield, according to authorities.

About 10:15 a.m., one man tried to enter a Hurd Street resident’s vehicle while another man approached a nearby home, police said, adding the men fled in a silver Nissan Altima with a New Jersey license plate when a neighbor interrupted. The Altima was found to have been stolen in a New Haven carjacking Thursday, according to police.

Officers later saw the Altima, occupied by at least three people, on Oldfield Road near Penfield Road, police said, adding the car continued to the Post Road and was in traffic at a red light near Sanford Street when the driver saw a squad vehicle and started speeding and weaving. Police lost the Altima until it entered northbound Interstate 95 from Mill Plain Road, where officers tried to stop the car, law enforcement said. When it sped away, officers ended the pursuit and notified state authorities about the situation, according to police.
