Warde and Ludlowe Distance Runners Earn Gold At CIAC Class L Meet

Warde's Warnick finishes first in 3,200 meters and second in 1,600 meters

The Fairfield Warde boys indoor track team, led by junior Harry Warnick, finished 11th out of 30 schools in the CIAC Class L championships Friday night at the New Haven Athletic Center.

Warnick totaled 18 points, taking second place in the 1,600 meters (4:24.71) and winning the 3,200 meters (9:44.22).

In the latter race, Warnick out-kicking Hand’s Daniel Nestor (winner of the 1,600) in an excellent tactical race.  His performance in the 3,200 set a school record and earned him All-State honors.

 The Ludlowe boys’ team earned 11 medals and scored 26 points to finish seventh overall.

Andrew Fernandes, Robert Thottam, Mike Frasco and Jack White won the 4x800 in 8:21.49 to pick up 10 points and All-State honors.

Senior Tyler Schwarz had a strong meet, scoring 12 points by finishing second in the 300 meter dash (36.60) and fourth in the 55 meter dash (6.76). 

Junior Mike Frasco took fifth place in the 1,600 (4:38.44), and the Falcons’ 4x400 team of Brendan Deely, George He, Jack White and Andrew Fernandes also finished fifth (3:42.16). 

The Warde girls’ team also had a great night, taking fifth place with 11 medals for 28.33 points. 

Freshman Kate Allen won the 1,600 and All State honors in a time of 5:18.75, while senior Alyson Leppla took second place in the shotput with a throw of 34-7.5.

The sprint medley relay team of Sarah Collins, Victoria Edison, Mackenzie Dancho, and Cate Allen took third place (4:25.75). Cate Allen, Casey Taracka, Emily Pullen and Mackenzie Dancho finished place in the 4x400 relay (4:24.65). 

Dancho completed the Mustangs' scoring by tying for fourth place in the high jump (4-10).
