Warde Falls To Darien IN FCIAC Softball Playoffs
Mustangs fall to Blue Wave, 5-1; take 16-5 record into state tournament
No. 5 seed Fairfield Warde fell to No. 4 Darien, 5-1, in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC softball tournament on Monday.
The Mustangs managed only four hits off Darien ace Jessica DeMaio, scoring their only run on a defensive miscue.
Warde's Gina Treglia allowed two runs in the first innings and three in the fourth. Kelly Fahey and DeMaio each has two RBI for the Blue Wave (17-4), who advanced to Tuesday's semifinals at Sacred Heart University.

In the fifth, Warde loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and an infield hit, but the Mustangs settled for only one run..
Darien actually thought it was out of the inning, as DeMaio appeared to get Treglia on a groundout. However, as the Blue Wave raced toward the dugout, the umpires claimed first basemen Kelly Fahey did not have possession of the ball long enough to constitute an out.

After a short argument between Coach Nick DeMaio and the umps, Treglia was called safe, allowing Warde to score its only run.
The Mustangs, who also lost to Darien in the regular season, 5-4, take a 16-5 record into the state tournament that begins next week.
