Winter Woes Lead to Budget Woes for Fairfield Department of Public Works

The department spent nearly double what was budgeted in dealing with the brutal winter.

While spring begins on Friday, it will be a long time before we can put the winter that was behind us — especially in the town’s budget.

Town officials are currently in the process of figuring out how to make up for a $422,542 shortfall in the Department of Public Works budget, according to the Fairfield Citizen.

The Citizen reports that $408,102 was budgeted to cover staff overtime, outside contractors, materials, repairs and meals but $830,644 was spent in dealing with the brutal winter.

Fiscal Officer Robert Mayer told the Citizen that the funds will come from “multiple sources” which officials are currently in the midst of figuring out.

But the expenditures won’t be over any time soon, not with pothole season in full swing.
