Woman Killed, Driver Seriously Injured In I-95 Crash

Saturday afternoon's accident closed the southbound lanes in Fairfield.

A woman from Douglaston, Queens, N.Y., died Saturday afternoon when the car she was a passenger in on Interstate 95 in Fairfield and burst into flames.

State Police report the driver sustained serious injuries when his 2009 Cadillac CTS  swerved from the center lane onto the right shoulder of the road, striking a guard rail. The car then continued forward until it slammed into a concrete bridge abutment.

Mary Hughes, 67, was transported to Bridgeport Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The driver,  Ronnie Hughes, 63, of the same address as Mary's, was transported to St. Vincent's Hospital.

The nursing supervisor at St. Vincent's declined to provide information on Hughes' condition. The State Police report of the accident said he was burned and had incapacitating injuries.

The accident, reported at about 3:30 p.m., occurred in the southband lanes between exits 24 and 23. The  car came to rest in the center lane, completely blocking the highway.

The accident is still being investigated by State Police.
