FAIRFIELD, CT — A New Haven woman is accused of stealing and altering a check left in a Fairfield resident’s mailbox, according to police.

Briana Peggy Jones, 25, was arrested Feb. 4 on a warrant in connection with a forgery investigation and charged with second-degree forgery and second-degree larceny, police said.

The incident was reported Oct. 6, according to police, after a resident wrote a check to the Fairfield tax collector and placed it in their mailbox. The bank later notified the resident about possible fraudulent activity, according to police, who said the check had been altered to be made payable to Jones for a different amount than was originally written.
