FARMINGTON, CT — A 10-year-old child was injured Tuesday in an accidental shooting in a parking lot at 1 Forest Park Drive, according to the Farmington Police Department.
The Farmington Police Department said officers responded to a medical call on April 28 after a firearm discharged.
A preliminary investigation found that a 19-year-old had been illegally carrying a gun and left it unattended in a vehicle with the child, identified as a family member.
The child sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg when the firearm discharged.
Authorities said the injury is believed to be non-life-threatening.
The child was taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.
As a result, police arrested Jordan Cruz, 19, in connection with the incident.
WFSB Channel 3 reported that Cruz was charged with negligent storage of a firearm, risk of injury to child, first-degree reckless endangerment, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal possession of a large capacity magazine, illegal possession of a firearm with no serial number and illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle.
Cruz was held on a $300,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Litchfield Superior Court on Wednesday, April 29.
Police described the incident as isolated and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
