Thousands Remain Without Power In Connecticut After Severe Storms

CONNECTICUT — Thousands of people remained without power across Connecticut Saturday evening following severe thunderstorms that moved through the state Friday night.

Reports of storm damage came from communities across Connecticut, with strong winds, lightning and heavy rain knocking down trees and power lines and causing road closures and other damage. More than 17,000 power outages were reported statewide at the height of the storm, according to media reports.

There were about 2,600 customers still without power Saturday evening, according to outage information from Eversource and United Illuminating.

Eversource reported thousands of customers without power Saturday as crews continued working to restore service. Here is a look at communities with Eversource outages and the number of customers without power as of about 8 p.m.:

• Greenwich: 95
• Stamford: 94
• Avon: 86
• Westport: 84
• Ridgefield: 79
• Redding: 77
• Stafford: 76
• West Hartford: 72
• Norfolk: 66
• Waterbury: 59
• Bristol: 53

The storm also caused significant outages in areas served by United Illuminating. Earlier Saturday, more than 18,000 UI customers were without power, with Bridgeport and Trumbull among the hardest-hit communities. Most of those outages had been restored by Saturday evening.

Crews across the state also responded to downed trees, flooding and other storm-related hazards. Lightning strikes were blamed for several fires and instances of property damage, including a house fire in Cheshire.

Residents were urged to use caution around downed power lines and storm debris and to avoid roads that remain closed because of flooding or fallen trees.
