FARMINGTON, CT — Farmington students returned to school Monday, Aug. 31, and town officials are reminding motorists to slow down and pay close attention as school buses and children return to local roads.
The Town of Farmington issued a back-to-school safety reminder ahead of the first day of classes, asking drivers to be particularly cautious in school zones and near bus stops.
Officials urged motorists to put away distractions and watch for students, crossing guards and school buses.
The town also reminded drivers about Connecticut's rules for stopping for school buses.
When a school bus displays flashing red lights and has its stop arm extended, motorists must stop at least 10 feet away and remain stopped until the red lights are turned off and the bus begins moving again, according to the town.
Passing a stopped school bus can result in a $450 fine for a first offense, the town said.
Drivers should also exercise additional caution around bus stops because children can unexpectedly enter or cross the roadway.
"A little extra patience and attention can make a big difference," the town said. "Let's work together to help every Farmington student get to school and home safely."
The town also wished Farmington students, families, teachers and staff a safe and successful school year.
