FARMINGTON, CT — The East Farmington Volunteer Fire Department has created a memorial featuring 343 individual flags to honor the New York City firefighters killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The display, located at 94 South Road, comes as communities prepare to observe the 25th anniversary of the attacks Friday, Sept. 11.
Each flag represents one of the 343 New York City Fire Department firefighters who died responding to the World Trade Center attacks.
Rather than identifying the firefighters only as part of the collective number, the Farmington memorial seeks to recognize each person individually.
Every flag includes the firefighter's photograph, rank, name, and apparatus assignment, according to the department.
"Every flag bears the firefighter's photograph, rank, name, and apparatus assignment, ensuring that behind the number 343, we remember the individual heroes and the lives they lived," the department said.
The department said the memorial pays tribute to the firefighters' courage and sacrifice while remembering all those who died in the attacks.
"25 years later, their sacrifice has not been forgotten, and it never will be," the department said.
The department concluded its tribute with a simple message: "343 Heroes. Never Forgotten."
