FARMINGTON/AVON, CT — Residents looking for an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Halloween pumpkins can bring them to a Farmington farm throughout November as part of a pumpkin recycling initiative by an Avon commission.
The Avon Sustainability Commission and Sub-Edge Farm are sponsoring the "Squash Food Waste! Recycle Your Pumpkin" program, which will run from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30.
The initiative encourages residents to recycle their leftover pumpkins and gourds rather than throw them away.
Pumpkins and gourds can be dropped off at Sub-Edge Farm, 199 Town Farm Road in Farmington, during the farm shop's regular business hours.
The collection schedule is:
Residents should place their pumpkins and gourds in the trailer near the farm shop.
All donated pumpkins and gourds must be unpainted and free of nonorganic materials, including decorations or other attached items.
The program is intended to help reduce food waste by providing an alternative to disposing of pumpkins and gourds in household trash.
