Bear Chases Farmington Bicyclist

The man was cycling on a rails to trails path when the bear emerged from a wooded area and briefly pursued him.

FARMINGTON, CT — A bicyclist was chased by a bear along a rails to trails path Monday afternoon, according to officials from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The man said he was riding his bicycle on a path off New Britain Avenue near Oak Ridge around 3 p.m. when a bear emerged from the woods and followed him. Farmington police said there have been no previous reports of bear activity in this area.

Farmington police said the cyclist reported the bear did not make physical contact with the cyclist, and broke away from him after a few moments.

DEEP Environmental Conservation (EnCon) police responded, along with Farmington police. The bear had left the area and was not located at the time, police said.

DEEP Wildlife staff plan to put a bear trap in the area to see if they can capture the bear.
