FARMINGTON, CT — A black bear was spotted helping itself to a trash in a Unionville driveway Saturday. The video, as seen in the Neighbors app, shows the bear knocking over a trash barrel, then poking its head inside and dragging out a white garbage bag, leaving a trail of debris behind.

Black bears have become a more common sight in Connecticut during recent years. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection recommends that residents remove birdfeeders and secure any potential food sources. Bears have no problem snacking on trash, barbeque grill leftovers, compost and pet food.

In most situations bears will wander back to more secluded areas, and they can often be scared away by loud noises. Bears were spotted more than 8,000 times in 2018. Sightings can be reported to DEEP.
