Farmington Police Issue Troubling Scam Alert

According to police, the scammers are claiming to be police officers and they're trying to extort money from victims.

FARMINGTON, CT — Local police are investigating a troubling scam being reported in town in which callers pretending to be Farmington Police Department officers try and get money from those called.

According to the FPD, the scammers call from a number that is "spoofed," which means it looks like it originates from the department.

Then, the scammers portray themselves to be police officers and request money from victims to avoid an arrest.

FPD officials were clear on why this is a scam.

"Farmington PD will never request money be sent over the phone to avoid arrest," the department wrote in a bulletin on the situation.

Police urge those being called to hang up if a call claiming to be from the FPD appears suspicious.

"Farmington Dispatchers will be able to confirm whether a call from our agency is legitimate," police wrote.

Police said those who are suspicious can call the Farmington Police Department's routine line at 860-675-2400.
