FARMINGTON, CT — A local senior living community recently helped give the gift of warmth to those in need courtesy of a successful coat drive.

More than 230 winter coats were distributed to local families this month after a community drive organized by Farmington Station Senior Living and Companions & Homemakers.

The coats were collected from staff, families, friends, and community members and distributed through Farmington Community & Supportive Services, which provides housing, transportation, youth, senior, and social services to residents in Farmington.

The first round of coats was made available during the department’s annual holiday program.

As attendees picked up food and gifts, they were able to select winter coats and jackets. Organizers said every coat was claimed.

“We are so grateful to both Farmington Station and Companions and Homemakers for putting this drive together,” said Laurie Mucciacciaro, Farmington Supportive Services supervisor. “Every single coat was taken — we didn’t realize how much of a need there was.”

According to organizers, one refugee family that recently relocated to town from a warmer climate received coats during the event, helping them prepare for their first New England winter.

The partnership marked a joint effort between senior living and home care providers to address seasonal needs in the Farmington Valley.

Lindsay Miller, executive director of Farmington Station, and Krista Moreau, director of private pay at Companions & Homemakers, were among those involved in the initiative.

Organizers said the response highlighted the level of need in the community and may inform similar efforts in the future.
