FARMINGTON, CT — It hasn't been an epic winter in the weather department this season, but that will change for a bit later this week.

And because of predicted bone-chillingly dangerous cold, Farmington town officials Tuesday announced the Farmington Community & Senior Center will be utilized as an emergency warming shelter for those who need it.

This is because of dangerously low temperatures and strong winds, which are forecast to plunge the mercury into the single digits and the wind chill factor well below zero.

As a result, the state’s severe cold weather protocol will go into effect beginning at noon Thursday, Feb. 2, and remain in effect until noon on Sunday, Feb. 5.

The Farmington Community & Senior Center, located at 321 New Britain Ave., Unionville, will be available to residents seeking shelter.

The community center is normally open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 10 p.m.

But the warming shelter can be opened on weekends by calling the routine number at the Farmington Police Department at 860-675-2400.

Farmington officials also said if people or someone they know is homeless and in urgent need of shelter, dial 2-1-1 for emergency support and connection to a shelter (available 24 hours a day/seven days a week).
