Farmington HS Site Closed To Public For Summer: Town

The move announced this week comes as construction crews are putting the finishing touches on a new FHS building set to open in August.

The Class of 2024's graduation last Friday, June 7, was the final commencement at the old Farmington High School site. The new FHS opens in August and, because of that project, the current FHS site has now been closed to the public for the summer.

FARMINGTON, CT — Farmington High School's Class of 2024 has already graduated, doing so on June 7, the last class to turn their tassels in the old facility.

With the last day of school being Monday, the local school system announced this week the Farmington High School site on 10 Monteith Drive will be closed to the public starting Wednesday, June 12.

This is so construction crews can put the finishing touches on much of the new, state-of-the-art FHS facility set to open nearby in August.

Meanwhile, demolition crews are about to tackle the complicated process of knocking down much of the current FHS.

All of these projects require folks to, simply, stay away for the summer, town officials said.

"Due to the final months of construction of the new building, site work, and the beginning of the demolition of the old building, the FHS campus and adjacent fields will be closed to the public," wrote the Town of Farmington this week.

In addition, during this time, there will be no access to the fields (including the turf field and track), parking lots, walking paths, or the facility.

The public, however, will still be able to access Farmington Town Hall, Staples House, and the Farmington Public Library via Monteith Drive.

After years of planning and a tumultuous approval process in the midst of the pandemic, Farmington is ready to finally open a new high school when classes resume in late August.

In June 2021, voters said "yes" to spending $135.6 million for a new Farmington High School building.

Then, on Dec. 8, 2022, they easily approved a $9.7 million supplemental appropriation for the new Farmington High School project, the second time in as many years the town went to the polls.

While the high school is nearly done, the next major project is to transform the old, 1922 section of the current Farmington High School into a larger, brand-new Farmington Town Hall.
