FARMINGTON, CT — If you're like most avid readers, your literary habits have you stockpiling books upon books — enough to turn your home into one, massive bookshelf.

Those looking to trim down their book stockpile, however, can look to the Farmington Public Library system, which this month has started collecting donations for its upcoming Spring Book Sale.

Spearheaded by the Friends of the Farmington Library organization, library supporters are asking folks to think of them when they're looking to share their books.

But, according to the Friends, there are some basic rules to follow.

"Based on our experience with donations, we do have to impose some guidelines as to age and condition of books," wrote the organization via Facebook.

"Books must be in excellent condition: no missing or torn dust jackets, clean, no dust, no yellowed or mildewed edges/pages, not basement or attic stored."

Details of the spring sale are not finalized, but proceeds will benefit library programs and operations not covered in the budget.

The Friends also have some special requests and rules regarding what they want. They include:

• Newer fiction adult hardcovers, preferably after 2015.

• Older books on history or biographies are acceptable, but must be clean and not yellowed.

• No travel guides, finance, medical, health or diet books before 2017.

• No computer books, “IDIOTS" and “DUMMIES" books before 2017.

• No audio cassettes, record albums, CDs, DVDs (except Great Course & Books on CD).

• No magazines, encyclopedias or sets of books such as Time-Life books.

Those donating can take their book donations to the main library at 6 Monteith Drive during regular library hours.

The library is asking folks to limit donations to two bags or boxes at each visit.
