Farmington's New Roundabout: What You Need To Know

The Town of Farmington has recently unveiled a new roundabout in town and local officials are offering tips to motorists on safety there.

FARMINGTON, CT — In the early 1970s, the English progressive rock band "Yes" was inspired by a series of roundabouts the tour bus took en route to a concert in Scotland.

Hence, the classic song "Roundabout," which many classic rock fans will recognize.

Well, in Farmington, a new, recently opened roundabout at the intersection of Two-Mile and South roads isn't causing much inspiration, but, rather, consternation and, for some, perspiration.

This is why the Town of Farmington this week put out some information publicly called "Traffic Roundabouts 101."

"You have probably seen these in other Connecticut communities and now we have our first one here in Farmington," wrote the town. "For some, it’s exciting, for others it’s a nuisance and for others it’s confusing."

Essentially, town officials said, all traffic goes to the right, yielding to vehicles coming from the left as well as any pedestrians.

According to local officials, roundabouts actually are "considered safer than traditional intersections."

While those new to roundabouts might not agree with those stats, the reality is a bit of experience is all that's required to make navigating these traffic features more manageable.

The town even posted a graphic and link to a Youtube video about driving in roundabouts as its better to learn now than after a fender-bender.
