Farmington Names Top Teacher For New Year

A Farmington High School history teacher was named the 2022-23 Teacher of the Year.

FARMINGTON, CT — With school already starting Monday, Farmington also has named its top teacher for the new school year.

Last week, the Farmington Board of Education and Farmington Superintendent of Schools Kathleen C. Greider announced the 2023 Teacher of the Year for the Farmington Public Schools.

Joel Nick, a social studies and economics teacher at Farmington High School, has been named Farmington’s Teacher of the Year for the 2022-23 school year.

"Mr. Nick is a beloved and expert teacher who has expanded Farmington High School’s course offerings as well as club activities to meet the needs and interests of all learners," wrote the school system in an Aug. 24 announcement.

"The expansion of these offerings has led to numerous academic recognitions in the areas of economics, socialstudies and debate on a national level."

“I could not be more thrilled to place a spotlight on an exemplary educator, leader and caring individual, Joel Nick. He goes above expectations in every aspect of his work with students," Greider said.

"Students seek out his courses and club activities because he creates an exciting and highly engaging learning environment that is equitable and inclusive," said Farmington Board of Education Chairperson Elizabeth Fitzsimmons.

FHS Principal, Dr. Scott Hurwitz said "Mr. Nick is the consummate professional and outstanding representative of excellence in teaching and learning here in Farmington.

Nick received a sixth-year degree in administration from the University of Connecticut and his 7-12 history and social studies certification from Saint Joseph College.

Prior, Nick earned a masters degree in history and a bachelor of arts degree in political science, both from the University of Connecticut.

Nick began his career teaching social studies in 1996 at Stafford High School and moved to Lyman Hall High School in 2002.

Nick joined Farmington High School as social studies department leader in 2010 before transitioning back to the classroom full-time in 2013.

Nick lives in Middlefield with his family and he enjoys reading, biking, golf, cooking, fishing and spending time with his wife and daughters.

Nick is also an avid fan of the Buffalo Sabres and the Boston Red Sox and enjoys watching games when he can.
