FARMINGTON, CT — A small pocket park at a key intersection can expect some big improvements both aesthetically and functionally.

Farmington Town Planner Shannon Rutherford updated the Farmington Planning and Zoning Commission Sept. 12 on the matter.

The park is located at the intersection of New Britain Avenue and Plainville Avenue (Route 177) and its makeover will result in new and improved features making it a nice place for pedestrians to relax.

It is located in Unionville Center and the town's architectural design review committee and Unionville Historic District and Properties Commission have reviewed and weighed in on the improvements.

Among the features planned:

• Benches there will be black and match the other park benches seen throughout Unionville and on Route 177.

• A black, five-loop bike rack will also be installed.

• Wayfinding signs will be there and be on black, steel poles with decorative bases, matching other light poles in Unionville Center. They will stand no taller than 10 feet, according to meeting minutes.

• Plans also call for a proposed informational kiosk to serve visitors as well.

Rutherford asked for confirmation the PZC agrees these site amenities and directional signs do not warrant a site plan application.

The commission confirmed there is no need for a site plan application and the project will move forward.
