A recent list by Value Penguin ranked Farmington as the 59th safest municipality in the state.
The rankings are based off of 2012 crime data submitted to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting program.
Farmington had 94 reported violent crimes per 100,000 residents (There are about 25,400 residents according to the 2010 U.S. Census) and 2,477 property crimes per 100,000 residents. There is no doubt that many of the property crimes come from shoplifting complaints at the Westfarms Mall.

The methodology behind the report is that crimes per 100,000 residents were calculated and violent crime accounted for 90 percent of the score while property crime accounted for 10 percent. The publication also figured out the police to civilian ratio.
Some criminologists and data experts have questioned the validity of “safe city” reports, especially when they compare municipalities that greatly differ in size.

Press Penguin had an overall ranking and it broke down ratings by municipalities with 45,000 or more residents, 20,000 to 45,000 residents and under 20,000 residents.
The report also doesn’t take into account how some municipalities can experience a swell in population during commuting times or from attractions such as a large mall.
