Farmington Traffic Board Nixes Speed Limit Hike For Road

Such a move was deemed too dangerous for motorists on the road, creating liability issues as well.

FARMINGTON, CT — The Farmington Traffic Committee shot down a request to increase the speed limit on Talcott Notch Road.

The well-traveled local road connects Route 4 to Route 10 in Farmington.

The individual making the request to the town's traffic board, which is comprised of town, fire department and police officials, had sought to increase the speed limit from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour.

But, according to committee members, doing so would represent both a safety hazard and a potential increase in town liability.

According to committee members, raising the speed limit to 40 mph would, actually, result in motorists going 50 mph, which is much too unsafe for that road.

"The geometry and sightline of the road wouldn’t meet approval for a higher speed limit. Furthermore, the road can be treacherous during storms," read committee meeting minutes.

"There would be a greater liability to make such a drastic change in an area where there’s a history of accidents."

Farmington's traffic authority is the town manager and the traffic review board acts as an advisory group to the town manager.
