Find Out Which Farmington Properties Were Added To Blight List

Being named to Farmington's official blighted property list opens up property owners to subsequent enforcement action.

Folks may be welcomed in Farmington, but Farmington doesn't welcome blight, with the town council last week adding two local properties to the town's blight list, subjecting them to further enforcement action.

FARMINGTON, CT — Local officials have added two properties to Farmington's list of blighted properties, a legality that opens up the property owners to municipal enforcement of anti-blight rules in town.

The Farmington Town Council Jan. 10 unanimously voted to add 14 Blueridge Drive and 23 Lakeview Drive to the list of blight in town.

Acting Farmington Town Manager Joseph Swetcky told council members that getting on the list is, often, a process that starts with either a town employee noticing a dilapidated property or a complaint from a resident.

"Staff goes around, but we also do get complaints from property owners." Swetcky said. "We try to work with them first, but then we do recommend that they go on the blighted property list."

According to Farmington's building code, a blighted property has several factors going against it, including: missing or boarded windows; collapsing roofs, walls or floors; foundation holes and cracks; vermin infestations; and garbage, trash and/or abandoned vehicles present.

Enforcement of blight rules includes hearings, notices and, possibly, fines.
