Lorraine Douglass has spent the last twenty-five of her eighty-nine years as a devoted Meals on Wheels volunteer, and plans to keep going. “Her commitment to Services for the Elderly and our meal program is truly amazing,” said Nancy Walker, the organization’s Executive Director. “Two or three times every month, in rain or snow, through all those years, she has faithfully delivered meals to her Farmington neighbors.”
After retiring as a bookkeeper, Mrs. Douglass was invited by her sister-in-law Virginia Douglass to be a Meals on Wheels volunteer with her, because “we can always use more people.” Since then, she has delivered meals with her sister, daughter, and granddaughter. It’s nice to have company, she explains. Now she delivers meals with Cecilia Wille, who became a volunteer this year.
“People are so appreciative and I like the fact that I’m doing something to help them,” said Mrs. Douglass. “It makes me feel good.”

Mrs. Douglass enthusiastically recommends Meals on Wheels not only to retirees but also to younger people: “They’ll get a good feeling and see what needs are out there.”
Wanting to do more still, Mrs. Douglass now volunteers once a week at the Farmington Food Pantry, too.

“I feel so blessed that I have the ability and the health to help others, so I want to do whatever I can while I am able. If the day comes when I need help, I hope someone will be there for me,” Mrs. Douglass said.
